I’ve been installing Gentoo over the last day or so. Even though it takes a long time (I started from a stage two, which compiles basically everything), it seems to be worth it. Maybe it is just my imagination, but things do seem faster. I could also be because Mandrake started a lot of applications at startup and my current system isn’t. We shall see once I start adding the apps I use regularly.
What I am not looking forward to is configuring my sound card. It always seems to be a hastle. I have a Sound Blaster Live which is a very common card, so I don’t understand why it is such a problem. Oh well, I have to do it, so I may as well get around to it sooner rather than later.
University starts next week. This week is the so-called “fresher’s week”, which for those of us older people who’ve been at Uni a while translates to “the week where one can go mad and not have to worry about getting up for lectures the next day”. You can see why fresher’s week sticks as a name really, not quite such a mouthful! Should be full of fun and frolicks, often I guess of the alcohol fueled kind. Wish me luck!
