Although I was planning to give David Bowie a few listens, I didn’t get around to it in the end. I liked what I heard, but was distracted.
I was distracted by getting a copy of the new Morrissey album, Ringleader of the Tormentors. I got this because I found the single taken from the album quite catchy and I have been curious about what Morrissey is like for a while. I’ve come away with mixed feelings — I find some of the songs quite addictive, but some are a little cheesy. Saying that, I think overall the album is pretty good. I haven’t really listened to any other of either Morrissey or The Smiths albums, so I don’t know whether the new album is representative of the Morrissey in general. Ringleader of the Tormentors is worth a listen, however; I especially like tracks three and four if I recall correctly.
I also planned to listen to the Mystery Jets album in whole. This I did, and, though I don’t recall finding it bad exactly, I’ve had no inclination to listen to it again, so I’d presume it isn’t very good. Kind of like Aphex Twin’s Drukqs : it doesn’t seem too bad at the time but you never find yourself reaching out for it to put on the stereo.
Talking of Aphex Twin, he has a new album called Chosen Lords out. I believe this is a compilation of the best of a series of discs that Aphex Twin has released over the past year or so. I think I shall try and buy it soon to see what it’s like. Hopefully it will be back to Ambient Works and I Care Because You Do standards, as they are great albums.
An aside: I’m not quite sure whether having artists in bold kind of makes it look like I am name-dropping. Oh well, I’ll have to see what it looks like and then decide.
