Well, well. My task spaces post appears to have generated some interest, from a couple of shells, so maybe something like it will appear! If anyone does have any other ideas sparked off by the post, drop me a line. I always appreciate other viewpoint on my ideas, after all the main purpose is to make the PC easier to use for everyone I guess!

In less happy news, it seems the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry, a UK regulater thing) has decided that it's going to make techs such as cryptography even more stupidly restricted. Check out [this email](http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/pipermail/ukcrypto/2003-April/025262.html) to the ukcrypto mailing list. As happens too often, it seems that government is intent on trying to completely over regulate a technology that it doesn't really understand. Things like this annoy me quite a lot. Take the region coding system on DVDs. What's the point? I'm sure you can fill in the rest of that argument fairly easily. At least the UK gov has seen the stupidity of that and we can't get arrested for viewing DVDs from other places in the world, unlike in America, I believe (Correct me if I'm wrong!). Anyway, off to watch my region 1 dvd on my hacked DVD drive. Yay, Noir anime. It seems good so far. If and when I get a set top player, multi region it shall be. Maybe I should get one now, before the government sees fit to make that illegal too...

Over the past few months, I’ve been thinking of some ideas for a shell. Some of the ideas I’ve been thinking of invlolve the use of miniture application Windows instead of the current minimised ’taskbar’ style representation. I think that multiple desktops would be very well suited to this form of minimisation. The concept of using different virtual desktops for different tasks is not a new one. For example, in Linux my second desktop is for work, third for Web, forth Media and so on. Many current virtual desktops do not take this separation of roles into account, just giving the user more than one of the same desktop. Modifying the virtual desktop idea into more of a virtual ’task space’ paradigm would increase the use of such technology.
